Making of the 2001 Slit Scan

   • Slit Scan   How I reproduced the "stargate" effect developed by Douglas Trumbull for the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". To achieve this effect I used a compositing program with 3d space to be able to move the chamber forward on the Z axis, framing the slit until it comes out of the field. I put a graphic image behind the slit. Once this was done I turned the composite into a level and duplicated it several times (around 200) Each level starts 1 frame later than the previous level and, in each level, the graphics are shifted by a few pixels so that from the first to the last this passes all through the slit. This way, the layers all together will show the moving graphics forward. By replacing the graphics with others you will have the passage of different images and the duration you want.
