Winning - although it's the ultimate goal in competitive sport - is something many coaches don't like to talk about. It's as if Winning is a dirty word. I think some coaches are afraid to talk about Winning with their athletes because they fear it will place too much pressure on them. Add to that, sports psychologists have been very effective at educating coaches and athletes to focus on the "process": to focus on doing all the little things right in preparation and planning and the cumulative effect of doing those things - may lead to Winning. However - and this is important - athletes do not lay in bed at night dreaming of having a great "process". They dream about Winning. It's a bit like baking a cake. You can get all the ingredients, the cake tin, the utensils and the oven - you can find a great recipe - and then step by step - follow the process of making and baking a cake. But in the end - all that matters is that the cake tastes great. The process is important - but of far greater importance is ending up with a lovely dessert. The reason you're even making a cake is to end up with a tasty treat at the end - not just to follow the recipe. Even though PROCESS and WINNING are connected - being comfortable talking about and coaching winning is critical for coaches working with athletes in competitive sport. Coaches need to openly and honestly discuss Winning with their athletes and accept that in competitive sport it is the name of the game - there's nothing wrong with talking about, training for and embracing the concept of Winning. In addition coaches working with competitive athletes should build programs, activities and exercises in training which create a competitive environment - where athletes learn to win - to lose and to compete hard.
