In January 2025, China initiated a sweeping break from Western semiconductor supply chains following new export restrictions on lithography equipment and support services. After the suspension of ASML software updates and technical support and the halt of advanced cooperation with TSMC, Chinese authorities moved to eliminate reliance on foreign chipmaking tools. This shift followed years of U.S.-led sanctions aimed at restricting China’s access to extreme ultraviolet lithography, which had been considered essential for producing advanced semiconductors below 7 nanometers. In response, China accelerated domestic semiconductor programs involving Huawei, SMIC, research institutes, and universities, resulting in demonstrations of advanced chips produced with domestic equipment and the testing of a prototype EUV machine. By mid-2025, Chinese manufacturers reported progress in 5-nanometer and 7-nanometer production using non-EUV methods, alongside rapid development of local EDA software and AI-focused chips. These developments contributed to market volatility for global semiconductor firms and signaled a structural split in the global technology ecosystem, with parallel supply chains emerging for advanced chip design and manufacturing. https://www.reuters.com/world/china/c... https://www.reuters.com/technology/as... https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-war/ar... https://www.ft.com/content/9e8c2b64-0... https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...
