Toxic Megacolon | Megacolon Toxicum | Toxic Colitis | X-ray Abdomen | CT Abdomen Toxic megacolon is an acute complication seen in both types of inflammatory bowel disease and, less commonly, in infectious colitis and other types of colitis. It is due to fulminant colitis, which causes loss of the neurogenic tone of the colon, leading to severe dilatation and increasing the risk of perforation. Toxic megacolon criteria: Toxic megacolon diagnosis requires radiographic evidence of colonic dilation (greater than 6 cm) and at least three of the following: fever, tachycardia, leukocytosis, or anemia, along with one of dehydration, altered mental status, electrolyte disturbances, or hypotension. Toxic megacolon early symptoms: Early symptoms of toxic megacolon, a life-threatening condition, include severe abdominal pain, bloating, and tenderness, along with diarrhea, which may be bloody, and fever, requiring immediate medical attention.
