Cybersecurity, Supply Chains, and the Development of Mexico’s ICT Sector

Please join the CSIS Americas Program for a virtual discussion on emerging developments in Mexico’s information communications technology (ICT) sector, as well as the challenges and opportunities these pose. As the pace of digitization accelerates around the world, Mexico’s ability to expand its ICT sector will be key to not only economic growth within the country, but the competitiveness of North America as a whole. The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) offers one framework to move forward, sporting a robust digital economy chapter that modernizes intellectual property and cybersecurity provisions across the three countries. Since 2013 Mexico has also possessed one of the most sophisticated telecommunications regulators in Latin America in the form of the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) that makes the country well-positioned to meet the demands of an increasingly digitized world. While Mexico has made significant progress in recent years, millions remain without access to secure, reliable internet and telecommunications infrastructure. Furthermore, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has powerfully illustrated both the pace of digital transformations, as well as the true extent of the digital divide. This event is framed by the key trends highlighted in the recent CSIS Report “The Development of the ICT Landscape in Mexico: Cybersecurity and Opportunities for Investment” as well as explore the role of the United States in promoting a prosperous, secure digital future in Mexico.
