Wychwood is a blackgrass duo from Ottawa, Canada. "Red River Valley" is a traditional ballad from Manitoba, though Americans have tried to claim it for their own. There's a rather dark political and racial undertone to this sweetly sorrowful song of parting, which emerges from some of the older lyrics. Rather stunningly, the original chorus was "the half-breed who has love you so true," and there is also a verse about how "there never could be such a longing / in the heart of a white maiden's breast." This makes it clear the song's narrator would have been a Métis woman, and the man she fell in love with was probably a soldier sent west to put down the Red River Rebellion as part of the Wolseley Expedition. Stranger things have happened in war time of course, but we still think there's some wishful thinking embedded in the song's original appeal. Of course colonizers would like to sing a song about falling in love with your conquerer.
