What is Vibrato? ... • What Is Vibrato? Why Does Vibrato Happen? How do you strengthen the diaphragm? The diaphragm is an involuntary muscle. Singing is a voluntary act. In fact, making the decision to strengthen the diaphragm is also a voluntary act. So, it sounds confusing how to voluntarily work an involuntary muscle. But the diaphragm is still a muscle, so you can increase the strength of the diaphragm in exactly the same way you would any muscle. So, to strengthen any muscle, you have to do 2 steps: step 1, isolate the muscle; then step 2, give it something to do. For step 1 we want to isolate the diaphragm. That means you don’t want any other muscle in your body to help you breathe. So you literally want to do nothing as you continue to breathe. Pay attention to any movement, contraction, or tension in your body. Then relax and turn off any unnecessary muscle. Remember, the diaphragm is an involuntary muscle, which means you can’t actively control it. But if you relax and release any voluntary muscle in your core around your diaphragm, you should effectively isolate the diaphragm. Step 1 is hard because it feels wrong to do nothing. It’s natural to think you should do something more active when you want to work at improving your singing. But it’s so important to isolate the diaphragm and not let other muscles pick up the slack especially if you happen to have a weak diaphragm. Now for step 2. The diaphragm contracts when you inhale. So to give it something to do…you need to exhale. Empty your lungs so that the diaphragm now needs to work and contract to refill the lungs. Don’t give into the temptation to actively inhale. When you concentrate on inhalation and your mind is active when you breathe in, that’s how other voluntary muscles in your body help the diaphragm and prevent it from becoming stronger. Concentrate on exhaling. Then completely disengage when you inhale to keep the diaphragm isolated. The result is what we refer to as passive or quiet breathing. That’s breathing that only engages the diaphragm. When I exhale, it should be noisy and active. But when I inhale, it needs to quiet and calm. Continue to do exercises that use your entire lung capacity. Empty your lungs completely and leave your diaphragm as the only muscle doing the work to inhale. And that is how to strengthen the diaphragm.
