(SEE HOT LINKS BELOW) Photos that span across 40 years of Sand River hunting history. Audio background is of the 1990 and 1991 hunting seasons. 0:00 Audio history from 1990, November 10th 0:06 Photos of deer shot pre-Sand River property 00:27 1961 Daune and CR Moore with John's buck. 1961 was the first year the property was hunted on. John was the first to shoot a deer on the newly-purchased property. He was standing down in the lowlands just west of Polock's Point, when a nice buck came running east to west over the ridge. 00:36 1966 Bob Jensen with John's buck in garage. In 1966 Bob Jensen, John's brother- in-law was introduced to the Sand River Shack. Jensen saw 7 deer off Polock's Point and best as we can remember, never took a shot. Jensen became known for his wonderful dry sense of humor and the ability to fart the Star Spangled Banner in B flat. 00:42 1968 Another of John's bucks. Duane shot a medium-sized doe off of his stand located on the north end of the North-South Ridge. This deer was flushed through by Daune and John as they walked in from the road. It wasn't until November 2nd, 1990, that it was realized that John also shot a buck this year off Severt's Point. This eight Point buck had to be dragged across the lowland through the muck and water. They brought it all the way to the southeast end of Mickey's Ridge where the tractor had been parked. 00:47 1972 Arla, Lori, Todd, Jerry and Sandy 00:52 1976 Bob Jensen's last year of hunting shoots a buck. This was to be Bob Jensen's last year of hunting. Perched on the north end of Polock's Point, Jensen saw 5 deer and emptied his clip without even scarring them.As he struggled to get one shell into the barrel four of the deer wandered off to the south. He finally shot a buck who had continued to play around below his stand to the west. Bob said, "I could have jumped on it easier than shooting it!" To this day, we credit Bob Jensen for teaching us all the value of taking a break in the day and heading into the trailer for a warm lunch. 00:56 1977 Ray and Butch Moore with Daune's buck. The first weekend was a very pleasant one weather-wise. Ray and Butch Moore visited the shack on opening day. Duane has a picture of Ray and Butch standing next to the buck that Daune shot that first morning. This was the first year of hunting for Todd Kuss. He took to the stand up on the north end of the North- South Ridge about 100 yards north of Daune. 01:12 1978 This year will be remembered for Jerry's first year deer hunting, Todd shooting his first deer and Duane’s wild goose chase on the last day of hunting to get his. 01:16 The 1979 season started off with just a single BANG! A bang that resulted in Jerry Kuss's first deer. Jerry shot his buck off a stand situated at the south end of the North-South Ridge just before it drops down into C.R. Point. 1:33 1981 This was the first year since 1974 that the party was skunked. It was the fourth year since 1961 that not a single deer is shot on the property. During this year, like most since the bucks only came into effect, does were seen but no bucks. In April of 1993, during a spring cleanup effort by the team, Jerry Kuss and Doug Smith agreed that this was the year the new trailer, purchased from Doug Smith's father Gerald, was brought onto the land and used for hunting. 1:38 1982 Jerry again gets his deer at night, this time a 6 Point buck. Jerry's on his stand on the south end of the North-South Ridge. Doug, our newest member of the team, shoots his first deer on the property, a second buck. He was hunting on top of a stand located on the southwest corner of Hatchet Ridge. 1:42 1983 This opener produces a wet week- end, while Jerry continues in his evening extravaganza by shooting a 7 point buck. The next weekend consists of 30 degree temperatures and snow. Unc John comes through with a spike buck on the second Sunday. Daune produces a weasel and one slightly used cement block (1978 is the last time Don has shot at a deer) 1:47 1985 Opening morning Doug shoots a buck off Mickey’s stand. The next day he does it again, another buck off Mickey’s stand, this time in sunny warmer weather. The second weekend we found ourselves with 6" of snow on the ground and in the trees. By Sunday, the temperature rose to about 37 degrees and Daune got himself a buck off his stand on the north end of the North Ridge. 1:57 1986 This Friday before opener it rained cats and dogs. That Saturday opener we faced low 30’s, intermittent snow and winds from 20-40 M.P.H.. Trees were blowing down as you sat and watched from your tree stand. This first weekend Unc John has great difficulty locating and keeping track of his pants. That morning at 9:45 a.m. Daune gets a spike buck on the north end of the North-South Ridge. In the afternoon at 3:40, Todd shoots a fork buck off of the same stand while Mike Porter is viewing a doe meandering around the area.
