An Onager was a type of roman catapult, developed sometime in 353 AD. Named after the kicking action the machine made when firing. The Onager would prove to be one of the most useful and effect siege weapons deployed by the Roman Military. Designed as a simpler alternative to the roman balista, The Onager was made up of a sturdy wooden frame. As a result, the onager was far easier to use and also required fewer men to operate it. As a result, it meant that more soldiers could learn to use it, meaning that training an onager crew took far less time than training a ballista crew. An onager is often portrayed as having a bucket to hold the projectile in. However, it is more likely that the onager utilized a sling rather than a bucket, as the range of a projectile launched from a sling is far greater than the range from a bucket. The Onager would launch its projectile via a single engine. This engine deprived its power of a large skein of twisted ropes. These ropes needed to be strong and elastic, and as a result, was often made from the hair of sinew. The catapult arm was then wound down and the tension in the engine would then fling the catapult arm back at a rapid speed, before hitting a padded frame, stopping the catapult arm, but transferring the anger to the projectile, and sending it flying into the air. As there was a lot energy in this catapult, the Onager would often vibrate when launched, kicking the end of the catapult up. As a result, the onager was often nicknamed “wild ass”. This was also the reason why Onagers did not have wheels, as if it had wheels the catapult would move when fired. The Onager would be in use from the 4th century Ad until the 6th century AD. By the late 6th century, the Avars had brought the Chinese traction trebuchet, also known as the mangonel, into the Mediterranean, when it soon replaced the slower and more complex torsion engines such as the onager. ____________________________________________________________________ Sources: En.wikipedia.org.
