Phaedra Pezzullo, associate professor of communications and cultural studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, will discuss the politics of fetal health and women's rights in the context of the environmental movement. Today, the environmental justice movement aims to resist the threats pollution poses to humans from the womb to the tomb; yet, they are stuck with the historical legacy of anti-abortion frames that separate the fetus from women's bodies. Pezzullo's talk will revisit feminist arguments about the political stakes of decontextualizing fetuses from women's bodies and imagining fetuses as ideal citizens. Then, she will explore the ways in which recent environmental campaigns balance advocating for environmental justice, fetal health, and women's rights. This event is free and open to the public and will take place on Thurs., March 3, 7:00-8:30 p.m., Grand Ballroom, MLK Jr. Union at Eastern Illinois University.
