Experience the full length of the Green Line on Newcastle's Tyne and Wear Metro, filmed from the front window of one of the system’s original trains! This journey runs from Airport to South Hylton aboard a Class 599 Metrocar, the original fleet introduced when the Metro opened in 1980. After more than four decades of service, these iconic units are now being withdrawn and replaced, marking the end of an era for the network. One defining feature of the Class 599 is its passenger-accessible front window, which allows riders to stand at the very front of the train and watch the railway ahead. It is a rare design feature in rapid transit and one that is disappearing in Newcastle with the arrival of the new class 555 fleet built by Stadler Rail. These replacement trains do not provide a public forward-facing window. Filmed in real time and without commentary, this recording documents not only the full Green Line route but also the distinctive sounds and perspective offered by the original Metrocar fleet, a view that will soon no longer be possible.
