In this video, we’re going to look at one of the most underappreciated fish in Alaska: the poor, persecuted pink salmon. Pink salmon are the smallest of the Pacific salmon that are found in the waters of Alaska. Also known as “humpies or humpy salmon” pinks are the most abundant salmon species in Alaska as they return to spawn each year by the tens of millions. While being the smallest and most prolific of the five Pacific salmon species, pinks are also the least revered. Due to their undeserved persecution, however, you’ll often have a beautiful salmon stream all to yourself when fishing for them and you’ll find that when fresh in the river from the ocean, humpies are aggressive biters, scrappy fighters, and some of the most fun you’ll ever have fishing, especially with a fly rod. Pink salmon can be caught on a wide variety of fishing gear and they’re fun for the whole family. They’re also one of the most versatile salmon for the kitchen and can be used in many different salmon recipes. As we explore the topic of pink salmon in this video, you’ll learn the answer to many common questions, such as “How big are pink salmon? Is pink salmon better than red? Why is pink salmon cheaper? What is pink salmon best for? What is the real name for pink salmon? What is the best time to fish for pink salmon? How do you fish pink salmon?” And more.
