The Tumultuous Reign of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe: A Tale of Power, Betrayal, and Legacy In the late 18th century, Sri Lanka's Kandyan Kingdom was a land of intrigue, political struggle, and rich cultural heritage. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, born Kannasami, rose to the throne in extraordinary circumstances. After the mysterious death of King Rajadhi Rajasinghe, the chief minister Pilimathalawwe orchestrated a coup to place young Kannasami, only eight years old, on the throne in 1798. Despite the king’s youth, his reign would be marked by power struggles, betrayals, and internal strife. As King, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe faced challenges from rival claimants to the throne, notably Prince Muththusami. With Pilimathalawwe’s political maneuvering, Muththusami was imprisoned and exiled. Despite his young age, the king worked to consolidate power, but his reign was not without turbulence. Pilimathalawwe’s machinations included bribery, plots of assassination, and attempts to sabotage the king’s rule. Yet, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe’s reign also saw cultural revival. The king commissioned the Kandy Lake, an iconic symbol of his reign, and supported the arts, including traditional Kandyan dance and music. During this time, the British colonial presence in Sri Lanka began to grow. In 1799, Pilimathalawwe secretly contacted British Governor Frederick North, seeking support to dethrone the king. Tensions escalated when the British declared war on the Kandyan Kingdom in 1803 after the king’s refusal to compensate Malay merchants. Although the British briefly captured the capital, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe regained control through guerrilla warfare. However, the internal divisions and betrayals continued to erode the kingdom’s strength. In the years that followed, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe’s reign was marked by increasing paranoia. Betrayals by close allies, like the chief Ehelepola, led to brutal acts of retribution, including the massacre of Ehelepola’s family. These events soured the king’s relations with his own people, turning him from a cultural patron to a despotic ruler. His mistrust of his chiefs fueled rebellions and internal conflicts. The final chapter of his reign came in 1815 when the British, led by Sir Robert Brownrigg, launched a full-scale invasion. On February 14, 1815, British forces captured Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe after he fled to Medamahanuwara. His capture marked the end of the Kandyan Kingdom’s independence. Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was exiled to Vellore, India, where he spent his last years in captivity. He died in 1832 at the age of 52. Despite his tragic end, his legacy as the last king of Sri Lanka lives on through his contributions to Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. The Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth Relic’s Paththirippuwa, and the traditional arts he revived remain lasting symbols of the Kandyan Kingdom’s rich history. Watch this video to explore the complex legacy of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last sovereign ruler of Sri Lanka, whose reign ended in betrayal, conflict, and exile, but whose cultural impact continues to be felt today. latest news update, latest news sri lanka, sri lanka latest news, latest news sinhala, gossip sinhala, lanka gossip, today news, today latest news Studio Ja Facebook - / studioja
