Getting to grips | New Holland T7.270 with spade lug wheels | Ploughing & wheat drilling 2021

Spade lug wheels, strakes, step wheels, iron lugs or spuds. Whatever you call them they have been aiding traction on farm tractors for decades. With the advent of steel and rubber track crawlers and improved rubber radial tyres they have become a distant memory for most. Not at Dutch family farm Enthoven in Zeewolde, Flevoland. They created a modern version of the spade lug wheels for their 270 horsepower New Holland T7.270. On this heavy clay soil the tractor is getting more than adequate grip to pull a new seven furrow Lemken Juwel 10 on land/in furrow plough. The wheel slip is at an amazing 0 to 1%! This not only results in more traction but also less fuel use. It also helps the tractor to stay on top when it is slippery. The spuds or lugs can be adjusted by simply changing the pins to give different gripping depths. This system has been in use for five years without any issues to the tractor or implements. After the recently lifted sugar beet land has been ploughed it is immediately drilled with winter wheat by the farms second tractor. A New Holland T7.225 with an Kverneland Accord fronttank and drill hooked up to a Lely Roterra power harrow. You might notice the 'chimneys' in the background. These are windmills under construction. What do you think of this system? How do you get grip when ploughing or don't you plough at all on your farm? More? Visit our website: https://www.agrifoto.nl.
