In 1962 a trash fire in Centralia, Pennsylvania caught a coal seam underground. Nobody could stop it. By the 1990s the town was condemned, the buildings demolished, and nearly all 1,000 residents were gone. Today fewer than ten people remain. What happened to the land they left behind is a story that almost nobody tells. This video covers the full history of the Centralia mine fire, the evacuation that followed, and what nature has quietly been doing with the ground ever since — including a butterfly waystation, 250 planted apple trees, and decades of unplanned rewilding on streets that still have their signs up. 🔥 CHAPTERS 00:00 — Introduction 00:42 — How a Town Disappears 03:50 — What Silence Looks Like 05:47 — What Came Back 07:31 — The Bigger Idea 08:56 — Outro 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING → Centralia, Pennsylvania — Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central... → Centralia Mine Fire — Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central... → Pennsylvania DEP — Official Centralia Mine Fire Resources https://www.dep.pa.gov/Business/Land/... → Atlas Obscura — "Centralia, Pennsylvania: A Ghost Town Reclaimed by Nature" https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles... → EPCAMR — Appalachian Tree Planting Project (official page) https://epcamr.org/home/appalachian-t... → Centralia PA — "Help Centralia: Plant an Apple Tree on April 17, 2021" https://www.centraliapa.org/help-cent... → PhillyVoice — "Apple trees, butterflies to be introduced in Centralia" https://www.phillyvoice.com/centralia... → History.com — "This Mine Fire Has Been Burning For Over 50 Years" https://www.history.com/articles/mine... → All That's Interesting — "Inside The Eerie Ghost Town Of Centralia, Pennsylvania" https://allthatsinteresting.com/centr... → DeKok, David.
