Totakaashtakam Story in English | Who was Totakaachaarya? | How was Totakaashtakam created? | NakshatraPedia Among Aadi Shankaraachaarya’s 4 main disciples, there was a disciple named Giree who had a very straight and simple nature. These are those 4 disciples who later were given the responsibility of Aadi Shankaraachaarya’s four mathas ("monasteries"). Aadi Shankaraachaarya was most loved by Giree who used to perform all his work with utmost love and devotion. Everybody knew that Giree wasn’t that good with the learnings. That’s the reason everybody thought that he did not understand the teachings of Shastras. One day, Adi Shankaraachaarya was starting a lesson on Advaita Vedaanta (non-duality). All his disciples were present except Giree, who had gone to the riverbanks to wash Aadi Shankaraachaarya’s clothes. Aadi Shankaraachaarya was waiting for Giree to return and was about to start reciting Shaanti mantra. He asked “ Has Giree not returned yet? “ One of his disciples Padmapadaachaarya answered his question saying - Oh Lord! it is alright if we do not wait for Giree because teaching him is as pointless as teaching to a wall. On hearing this, Aadi Shankaraachaarya answered - “ We will still wait for Giree to return. ” Hearing his guru’s order, Padmapadaachaarya sat there in silence. Aadi Shankaraachaarya understood that this is the right time to break other disciples’ ego and delusion. Aadi Shankaraachaarya endowed Giree with the knowledge of all the Shastras. Giree acquired all the knowledge of shastras. He could feel this on the riverbank itself and was literally in bliss. He came back running directly to Aadi Shankaraachaarya and spontaneously started reciting (with gratitude towards Aadi Shankaraachaarya) Totakaashtakam which is considered to be one of the toughest metres. Totak metre is considered to be one of the toughest metres and because Giree started to sing it in Totak metre on the spot, Aadi Shankaraachaarya gave him the name Totakaachaarya. #TotakaashtakamStory #AdiShankaracharya #Samved
