Rome's tyrannical chief of police, Baron Scarpia, has long harbored a desire for Floria Tosca, one of the city's most popular opera singers. But Tosca is already in love with the painter Mario Cavaradossi. But Scarpia has finally figured out how he can dispatch Cavaradossi and claim Tosca all for himself. He suspects Cavaradossi of hiding a political fugitive. He suddenly realizes he can drive Tosca into his arms — by sending Cavaradossi to the gallows. It's an act of cruelty that even Scarpia himself realizes is ungodly. "Tosca, mi fai dimenticare Iddio," he sings, as a chorus of churchgoers swells with the sounds of the Latin prayer Te Deum: "Tosca, you make me forget God!" Bass-baritone Alfred Walker brings to life Baron Scarpia in a role debut, now on stage in Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca." See it through September 5, 2021, as part of our 99th season: sfopera.com/tosca
