Pharoah Sanders : Heart Is A Melody 1983 Pharoah Sanders 1940 – 2022, was an American jazz saxophonist. Known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound", Sanders played a prominent role in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz through his work as a member of John Coltrane's groups in the mid-1960s, and later through his solo work. He released more than thirty albums as a leader and collaborated extensively with vocalist Leon Thomas and pianist Alice Coltrane, among many others. Fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world". Sanders' take on spiritual jazz was rooted in his inspiration from religious concepts such as karma and tawhid, and his rich, meditative performance aesthetic. This style was seen as a continuation of Coltrane's work on albums such as A Love Supreme. As a result, Sanders was considered to have been a disciple of Coltrane. Pharoah collaborated with many great players including the magnificent Alice Coltrane. Heart is a Melody is a live album recorded in 1982 and released in 1983. To my knowledge, and I stand to be corrected, this is his 20th album out of, I think, 37! And that doesn’t include the collaborative works. The band on this LP speaks for itself…. It emanates pure quality. Pharoah Sanders – tenor saxophone, vocals William Henderson – piano John Heard – bass Idris Muhammad – drums STUNNING DRUM work !!!!! Paul Arslanian – bells, whistle (track 4) Andy Bey, Flame Braithwaite, Cort Cheek, Janie Cook, Mira Hadar, Deborah McGriff, Jes Muir, Kris Wyn – vocals (track 3) If you like free jazz, jazz fusion, progressive or experimental music, you might want to pay attention to this LP and indeed Pharoah Sanders many other works. I just love this set. A Olé 21:25 B1 On A Misty Night 6:43 B2 Heart Is A Melody Of Time (Hiroko's Song) 7:25 B3 Goin' To Africa (Highlife) 3:33
