We begin our five-part Portland Series at the Sutor House, designed in 1938 by celebrated Oregon architect Pietro Belluschi, it is a quiet and deeply considered work of early modernism nestled in the hills of Portland, Oregon. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, the home embraces restraint, natural materials, and a seamless relationship between interior and landscape, where light, shadow, and season become part of the architecture itself. Since 2013, Aric and Erin Wood have served as thoughtful stewards of the Sutor House, undertaking a careful restoration rooted in patience, research, and respect. In addition to reviving the home, they also restored the surrounding landscape, reawakening the lush greenery and Japanese inspired garden that frames the house. Rather than reinventing the property, their work sought to reveal it, bringing Belluschi’s original intent back into focus while allowing both the house and landscape to age with grace. What emerges is a living home that honors its past and continues its story.
