Минең исемем Энди. Ницекте ҡәлләрегес? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Siberian Tatar language. The Siberian Tatar language is a Turkic language belonging to the Kipchak group, spoken mainly in the western Siberian regions of Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, and Kemerovo in Russia. It is divided into three main dialect groups — Tobol-Irtysh, Baraba, and Tom — which show notable phonetic and lexical differences. Although it shares certain similarities with the Volga Tatar language, it is linguistically distinct enough that many specialists classify it as a separate language. Modern Siberian Tatar is written in the Cyrillic script, though Latin and Arabic scripts were used in the past. The language preserves many archaic Turkic features and local Siberian influences, reflecting centuries of contact with neighboring peoples. Despite this rich heritage, the language is seriously endangered due to the dominance of Russian in education, media, and administration, as well as the lack of schools and media using Siberian Tatar, which has led to a gradual decline in its importance and in intergenerational transmission. The Siberian Tatars are the indigenous Turkic-speaking population of western Siberia, historically living along the Ob, Irtysh, and Tobol rivers. Their origins trace back to the medieval Khanate of Sibir and include a mixture of Turkic, Mongolic, and local Siberian groups. Traditionally, they engaged in hunting, fishing, animal husbandry, and agriculture, forming small, close-knit rural communities. Islam, introduced several centuries ago, remains a central part of their identity, and most Siberian Tatars practice Sunni Islam of the Hanafi school, combining religious observances with local folk customs. Culturally, they possess a rich tradition of oral poetry, epic tales, music, and distinctive styles of clothing adapted to the Siberian climate. In modern times, many Siberian Tatars have moved to cities but continue to maintain cultural associations, festivals, and community initiatives aimed at preserving their language and traditions amid growing assimilation and modernization.
