VMware Auto Deploy is a vSphere feature that automates the network-based provisioning (PXE boot) and configuration of ESXi hosts, allowing for rapid, consistent deployment of many servers without manual installation, using rules to assign specific Image Profiles (ESXi software) and Host Profiles (configuration) to hosts, ideal for large environments. Hosts boot from the network, get an IP via DHCP, download the ESXi image from TFTP, and receive their configuration from vCenter, enabling stateless (no local storage) or stateful (with local caching) deployments. || Key Components __Auto Deploy Server: The central component that receives host boot requests. __Rules Engine: Matches booting hosts (based on MAC, UUID, etc.) to specific Image & Host Profiles. __Image Profiles: Bundles of ESXi software (base image + drivers/VIBs). __Host Profiles: Templates for host configuration (networking, storage, security). __Answer Files: Used to provide answers to any manual prompts during ESXi setup. || How It Works (Stateless Example) __Boot: A physical server powers on and PXE boots. __Network Config: DHCP assigns an IP address and the TFTP server's IP. __Image Download: The host gets iPXE boot code and then requests the ESXi image from the Auto Deploy server via HTTP. __Profile Assignment: The Auto Deploy server uses its rules to determine the correct Image Profile and Host Profile for the host. __Boot & Configure: The host boots directly into memory using the assigned image and applies the host profile. __vCenter Join: The host connects to vCenter Server, completing the deployment. || Deployment Modes __Stateless: Hosts load ESXi and config entirely from the network; no local storage needed. __Stateless Caching: Loads from the network but caches the image to a local disk for faster subsequent boots. __Stateful Install: PXE boots once, then installs ESXi to local storage, behaving like a traditional install. || Benefits __Scalability: Deploy hundreds of hosts quickly and consistently. __Standardization: Ensures all hosts in a cluster have the same image and configuration. __Reduced Errors: Minimizes manual intervention and human error. __Simplified Updates: Update hosts by changing the Image Profile and letting them re-boot.
