EP-103 What you are about to hear is one of about 200 transcriptions made by Johnnie Lee Wills and his Boys that were made for General Mills in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1950 and 1952. These are called the Schmitt Transcriptions and they were played on country music radio stations throughout the United States. They are pretty hard to find today. The sound quality of these transcriptions varies; some are better than others, depending on the quality of the transcription discs, but you will hear them all over time. These shows were created in the studio for radio DJs to create a Johnnie Lee Wills radio broadcast as if he and the band were in the radio station. They were recorded in bulk, one after the other, in a few days. Each show was about 12 minutes long. The dates of the transcriptions are listed below. Each one of these shows were broadcast on most country music radio stations throughout the United States during the 1950s. These shows were created for the purpose of free distribution for public radio. The 200 Schmitt Transcription that Johnnie Lee Wills and his Boys made were recorded on the following dates: a. June 26-27, 1950 b. August 20-23, 1950 c. October 1, 1950 d. March 10-12, 1952 (40 shows) e. April 20-23, 1952 (39 shows) f. May 19, 1952 As to the musicians, featured are Johnnie Lee Wills, rhythm banjo and fiddle; Leon Huff, vocals; Clarence Cagle, piano; Don Harlan, sax and clarinet); Julian “Curly” Lewis, fiddle and vocals, Henry Boatman, fiddle; Chuck Adams, bass; Howard David, drums; Buster Magness, steel guitar; probably, Eb Gray, guitar. Frank Sims was the announcer. I have digitally remastered the original recording for clarity and stereo effect.
