Tibial Nerve The tibial nerve is one of the two terminal branches of the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the human body. A few centimeters superior to the popliteal fossa the sciatic nerve bifurcates into the Common peroneal nerve & Tibial Nerve. The tibial nerve is the largest distal extension of the sciatic nerve and is a branch of the lumbosacral plexus from spinal nerve roots L4-S3. The tibial nerve provides motor and sensory innervation to most of the posterior leg and foot. The tibial nerve supplies motor innervation to a large number of muscles. The long list includes the gastrocnemius, popliteus, soleus, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, abductor hallucis, flexor digitorum brevis, flexor hallucis brevis, foot lumbricals, quadratus plantae, flexor digiti minimi, adductor hallucis, foot interossei, abductor digiti minimi. In addition to its motor innervation, the tibial nerve give rise to sensory branches. These include the medial sural cutaneous nerve, medial calcaneal nerve, the medial plantar nerve and lateral plantar nerve. These sensory branches provide sensation to the posterolateral leg, lateral heel, lateral foot, medial heel, lateral aspect of the plantar surface of the foot and medial aspect of the plantar surface of the foot.
