Slovak Food Taste Test 🇸🇰 Eating in a Cave Restaurant Modrá Hviezda in Bratislava, Slovakia 🏰🍽️🍮

Come join us for a Slovak Food taste test as we visit a cave restaurant (Modrá Hviezda) in Bratislava Slovakia for lunch. We ended up ordering 5 different items from the menu including two drinks (wine and beer), two mains (both meat dishes) and a dessert to share. It ended up being a fantastic meal as the Slovak main dishes were hearty, rich and flavorful. We left feeling full and satisfied. The cave atmosphere was also very cool and cozy and we'd highly recommend this place. Keep in mind it is not a budget meal and ordering a couple of meat dishes, drinks and dessert will cost you over 40 Euros most likely. 1) Frankovka modrá red wine (dark skinned late ripening grapes rich in tannin with a spicy character) 2) Zlatý Bažant 'Golden Pheasant' Slovak Beer (12° svetlé pivo light coloured beer 4.7% ABV) 3) Pork chop in walnut crust with honey mustard sauce and roasted potatoes (bravčová kotleta) 4) Rabbit leg with forest mushrooms in a red wine sauce with herb potato herb dumplings (Králik na Šampiňónoch) 5) Homemade Slovak poppy seed dumplings (šúľance s makom) The restaurant we ate at in Bratislava, Slovakia: Modrá Hviezda   Slovak Restaurant Address: Beblavého 292/14, 811 01 Bratislava - Staré Mesto-Bratislava, Slovakia Hours: Open today · 11AM–11PM Phone: +421 948 703 070 Traditional Slovak Food in Bratislava 🇸🇰 | Modrá Hviezda Review & What to Eat Near the Castle! 🍽️ Slovak Food Feast at Modrá Hviezda, Bratislava 🇸🇰 Traditional Dishes, Castle Views & Hearty Portions! 🏰 Between Castles: Devin & Bratislava After an epic morning exploring Devin Castle, we found ourselves with massive appetites and ready for a lunch break before tackling Bratislava Castle. Our mission: sample more authentic Slovak food and recharge for more sightseeing. 🕯️ Atmosphere at Modrá Hviezda We wandered into Modrá Hviezda, a cozy, candle-lit restaurant that felt like dining in a medieval cave. The place was bustling with locals enjoying lively conversations. Sam ordered a local Zlatý Bažant 12° beer while Audrey went for the house red wine, Frankovka modrá—a light, pleasant pairing for the meal ahead. 🥩 Traditional Slovak Mains Pork Chop with Crushed Walnuts & Honey Mustard (bravčová kotleta): Audrey’s main arrived—an enormous pork chop, generously coated in crushed walnuts, served with roasted potatoes and drizzled with sweet and tangy honey mustard sauce. The portion was huge and the flavors, a perfect balance of sweet and savory, truly memorable. Sam sampled the dish and was blown away by the tenderness of the pork, the unique walnut crust, and the “lethally good” sauce. Slovak cuisine seriously does not skimp on portion sizes! Rabbit Leg with Wild Mushrooms in Wine Sauce (Králik na Šampiňónoch): Sam’s main featured a tender rabbit leg, surrounded by wild mushrooms in a rich wine sauce and accompanied by thick, crispy potato dumplings. The rabbit was surprisingly tender, not at all gamey, and paired perfectly with the earthy mushrooms and fluffy dumplings. Audrey enjoyed the combination of textures and flavors, with the wine sauce elevating the dish to gourmet level. 🍽️ Food Sharing & Generosity Portions were so massive that sharing was essential! Both mains were standouts—tender, flavorful, and ultra-satisfying. Slovak restaurants impress with their generosity; you’ll leave full and happy (maybe in need of a post-lunch siesta before your next castle climb). 🍮 Unique Slovak Dessert: Poppy Seed Dumplings (šúľance s makom) Dessert was an adventure—šúľance s makom, or poppy seed dumplings. Not the pierogi-style treat we expected, but soft, gnocchi-like “noodles” dusted with sweet poppy seed and sugar, served warm and comforting. The taste: reminiscent of soft gnocchi, mildly sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth. Not overly sugary—just the right finish to a hearty meal. 💸 Price & Value The feast was a splurge at 42 Euros (two mains, one dessert, one glass of wine, one beer), but the quality and quantity justified the price. Meat dishes ranged from 12 to 14 Euros; drinks and dessert made it a full, memorable Slovak dining experience. 🏃‍♂️ Next Stop: Bratislava Castle (Waddle Edition) With bellies full and spirits high, it was time to waddle up the hill (literally!) for more castle adventures. Pro tip: maybe do your sightseeing before a feast like this—or prepare for a slow walk uphill! 📣 Final Thoughts & Recommendations Modrá Hviezda is an absolute must for foodies seeking authentic Slovak flavors in Bratislava. The unique atmosphere, massive portions, and traditional dishes make it a culinary highlight of any trip to Slovakia.
