I went completely overkill building this small retaining wall at one of my rental properties. What started as a collapsed mess in the backyard turned into a full cleanup project that required removing nearly 7 tons of material, breaking up an old foundation with a jackhammer, and installing steel I-beams and railroad ties to build a retaining wall I’m confident will never fall down. This isn’t a how-to video — it’s more of a vlog style project documenting the process, the challenges of working in a tight space, and the reasoning behind the design choices. I purposely engineered this wall to be extremely strong and also serviceable in the future, using steel beams and railroad ties to create a structure that could potentially be rebuilt or modified if needed. Along the way we: Removed a collapsed retaining wall Hauled out thousands of pounds of dirt and debris Jackhammered an old concrete foundation in the way Installed steel I-beams as structural posts Built a new retaining wall using railroad ties I know there are many ways to build retaining walls, and I expect plenty of opinions. Feel free to challenge the design, question the engineering choices, or suggest how you would have built it differently in the comments!
