(2 Jul 1999) Natural Sound VOICED BY: Louise Bates Hundreds of protestors took to the streets in Jakarta on Friday to protest police violence that marred a demonstration on Thursday which left dozens of people injured. Some 300 protesters on Friday marched toward Indonesia's General Election Commission headquarters in Jakarta but were stopped some 500 metres short of the building by hundreds of heavily armed police and troops. 00:02 Demonstrators were out in force again on Friday. But this time, heavily armed police stopped them from marching to Indonesia's General Election Commission headquarters. 00:10 It was a far different scene 24 hours earlier, when police fired shots and tear gas into the crowd. Two dozen people were injured. Some, taken to the roadside for emergency treatment. Police refused to relent until the 15-hundred demonstrators retreated. 00:26 The protesters are angry it has taken so long to count the votes from Indonesia's June 7th election. So far, only 60 percent of the votes have been tallied. They also want Indonesia's ruling party, the Golkar Party, to be disqualified from the election altogether. They claim the government has been involved in vote rigging. 00:44 The election had been promoted with great fanfare. It was the country's first free election in 44 years, but so far the only results have been violence, and outrage. 00:53 Scenes like these provide little hope that the post-Suharto era will lead to peace and democracy.
