From June 8, 2021. Driving along Sol Duc-Hot Sprinfs Road to the Sol Duc Falls trailhead. Old-growth forest, subalpine lakes, and snowy peaks populate the Sol Duc landscape, while the Sol Duc River serves as a key highway for coho salmon, running through the valley and ascending to the lakes and headwaters in the surrounding mountains. The Sol Duc Valley is located in the northwest region of the park. Just 40 minutes west of Port Angeles, the Sol Duc is accessed by turning off Highway 101 onto the Sol Duc Road. Called the most beautiful falls in Olympic National Park, and situated just a few miles from Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and Campground, Sol Duc Falls is a treasure year-round. Unlike other falls on the Peninsula, you view it from above on the brink as it falls 50 feet into the slot canyon below. In the autumn rainy season and early spring runoff this falls can be spectacular as it booms beneath your feet. The resort down the road opens for the season in late March. In winter, the Sol Duc River Road can close because of snowfall, so check online before you head this way. You’ll hear the thundering sounds of Sol Duc Falls before you see them. If you are lucky and the sun is out, you’ll see rainbows in the mist surrounding the falls. Don’t forget to look in the river for cutthroat and steelhead salmon that run in the fall and winter. The hike to the falls is a short and easy one. From the roadside Sol Duc trailhead, the walk through an old-growth forest to the falls overlook is just under a mile (1.6 miles round trip.) It’s a mostly level trail with boardwalks and an occasional handrail fence making it suitable for hikers of all levels. From Highway 101 near the Fairholme Campground on the north side of the park, drive south on Sol Duc Hot Springs Road past the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort to the trailhead parking lot (approximately 13 miles.) For those looking to spend anywhere from a few hours to an entire day in the Sol Duc, there are a number of shorter hikes that may be suitable. From the parking lot, the walk through old-growth forest to the Sol Duc Falls overlook is just a mile. Lover's Lane (6 mile loop) and the climb to Mink Lake (5.2 miles roundtrip) can also be done in just a few hours. The Sol Duc Valley has a number of longer hiking trails which explore both the valleys and the mountains. The High Divide Loop that passes through Seven Lakes Basin is a popular 2-3 day hike. The views of Mount Olympus are astounding on a clear day. The Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort has a variety of activities, including mineral pool bathing, massage, and dining. The Salmon Cascades overlook is another popular destination during late October/early November. About 5 miles down the Sol Duc Road, visitors come to watch the determined coho salmon leap over the falls on their way to spawn upstream in the Sol Duc River. https://www.myolympicpark.com/things-... https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisi...
