The lyrics seem appropriate now as much as ever. There's a ton of great Collective Soul songs, including this one. I remember seeing them in SLC 15-20 years ago (yikes!) and being pretty blown away. I was like, "man, that Ed Roland is a freaking rock star!" Yes, he is. And deservedly so. They all put on such a great show. I hadn't consciously followed them super closely before that time, and I remember being surprised at how I basically recognized and really enjoyed their entire set list. For my fellow guitar enthusiasts: this is such a fun song to play. I don't think it was actually played on a 12-string in the original studio version. [Someone can check me on this, and most assuredly will.] But to me, I hear a normal six string in the left channel, and perhaps a Nashville-tuned (high strung) six string in the right channel (with some bleed from the respective other in each). For those who don't know, a "high strung" guitar is a guitar tuned like the high octaves of a 12-string. So played together with a six string, you get a 12-string, but with certain advantage, like more control over the balance--how loud/prominent the high octave is. E.g., in this song, the high octave is much more prominent in the mix (to my ears) than it otherwise would have sounded with a normal 12 string. You can actually buy sets of strings designed for this very purpose, which mirror the string diameters of the 12-string high strings. As an aside, I actually used a set of these once, for my "Home by the Sea" cover. Some of the keyboard stuff that I transcribed for guitar was pitched pretty high, so the Nashville tuning made a lot of those notes much more accessible to my non-lead-guitarist fingers. :) Speaking of fingers, I decided to add the octave on the 1st string to make it sound a little fuller during the verses (where it would have otherwise been muted, presumably). It upped the degree of difficulty a little. But that's usually the way I play it on a six string, just to give it more of a 12-string feel. So, old habits. :) So yeah, this gives me an arguably less "authentic" voicing for this tune, but as I mentioned above, without a high-strung guitar, the authentic voicing was a losing battle, anyway. So with all that nonsense that probably only interests me out of the way, please enjoy my solo acoustic rendition of this great tune. -Mike
