Not much needs to be said about this piece, a favorite of audience since it's premier in 1858. One of the first pieces of Brahms to be played publicly by an orchestra. The Cleveland Orchestra at the time of this recording in 1958, was at the height of its excellence under the perfectionist conductor George Szell. Leon Fleisher (1928-2020) was also at the height of his powers and frequently recorded with the Cleveland Orchestra. Fleisher was still 6 years away from the crippling nerve condition that would greatly limit his playing for the rest of his life.
