Alfred Hitchcock often used stairs, steps, staircases and similar apparatuses to heighten the suspense in his films. Often times, climatic moments occurs on staircases in his films. This video serves as a compilation of clips of such moments from 18 of Alfred Hitchcock's American films. The use of stairs has also been used to reflect the duality of the characters and setting. In Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt," a mundane, suburban family staircase develops into a shadowy ascent to the lair of a murderous psychopath after young Charlie's (Teresa Wright) Uncle Charlie (Jospeh Cotten) comes to visit. Previously a symbol of the all-American family, the staircase turns into a symbol for seedy underbelly of small town America. This video was created for a Washington State University class project.
