Pryor Garnett never expected to become a farmer but after 30 years as a patent lawyer, he set out to build an organic, self-sustaining farm from scratch. His vision quickly collided with reality when he discovered large piles of chicken manure poised to wash into the stream on his Sheridan property. Unsure where to turn, he called Oregon's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), who guided him through the emergency and helped him protect his land and water while producing his best triticale crop ever. That first interaction grew into a long-term partnership focused on soil health, organic transition, crop rotation, nutrient management, and habitat restoration. Together with NRCS and the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Garnett established pollinator hedgerows, improved soil fertility, supported native bees and even restored white oak habitat. Now he shares his farm with other beginning growers, proving how vital mentorship, conservation programs and community knowledge are for new landowners. For Garnett, building an organic farm is an investment in soil, the land and the future.
