Mabamba Swamp, located west of Entebbe on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, is a renowned wetland birding site in Uganda. Covering an area of 2,424 hectares, this swamp is characterized by thick marshes of papyrus, water lilies, and other wetland grasses. Mabamba Swamp is particularly famous for being home to the Shoebill, a large and peculiar-looking bird that is highly sought after by birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The swamp hosts over 300 bird species, including many globally threatened species and seven of Uganda’s twelve Lake Victoria biome restricted species, such as the Papyrus Gonolek. Additionally, the wetland is a Ramsar site and an Important Bird Area (IBA), highlighting its significance in biodiversity conservation. Birding in Mabamba Swamp is typically done from motorized wooden boats that navigate through a maze of trails cutting through the thick marshes. The swamp is also rich with lungfish, which is the favorite food of the Shoebill. This has historically led to competition between the Shoebill and local fishermen, who also seek lungfish. The wetland's designation as a Ramsar site in 2006 has provided some protection to the Shoebill. Birdwatching tourism has further enlightened the local community and fishermen, who now protect the Shoebill and benefit economically by renting out their boats to tourists. Mabamba Swamp is accessible from Kampala or Entebbe, with the easiest route being via the Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe, followed by a ferry crossing to Kasanje landing and a short drive to the swamp
