In a little old coal mining town of Wilkeson in the Carbon River Canyon in Pierce County, Washington, you'll find a quiet little park with two sets of railroad tracks and a line of aging, grass-covered coke ovens. Today, they stand as silent reminders of the heavy industries that once defined this area, fading in and out of the forest growth as the seasons change. But once a day, every year, as they have for the past 46 years, the rails ring again as Wilkeson holds its annual Handcar races. Participants compete for the quickest time over a 300 foot long stretch of track. Current record for a five person team (four pumpers, one pusher) is around 15 seconds. Interest in the railroad at the park has started to pick up, and more of the overgrown track has been cleared and reclaimed, allowing for expanded Handcar rides during the event.
