Date filmed: Monday the 29th of April 2024 Video filmed at 16:47 Route: Birmingham to Peterborough Line Melton Mowbray (MMO) is the closest station Crossing type: Foot Path Crossing with Miniature Stop Lights (FPC-MSL) Filming location: (Near) Badger Avenue, Melton Mowbray (LE13 0GD) A fairly short video filmed at this foot level crossing on a public bridleway in the very outskirts of Melton Mowbray, next to a new-build housing estate. In this video, a special-liveried GB Railfreight 'Shed' hauling an intermodal freight train for Felixstowe is seen powering by. A relatively new and standard Schweizer Electronic 'value for money' red/green light system of 'Miniature Stop Lights' is in use here, and there are signs instructing horse riders to phone the signaller before crossing as it's also a bridle path. This is a very uneven crossing, and you even have to walk across a little bit of ballast either side of the crossing floor. The type of this crossing, to be very technical, is an 'OMSL' crossing, Overlay Miniature Stop Light. These are newer and increasingly common types of user-worked and foot path crossings, and are installed completely independent of the existing signalling system, often using rail induction loops to detect trains rather than existing track circuits or treadles. Some often appear to be characterized by the time between activation and train arriving being rather close to or even under the standard 27 seconds, but rather worked out by taking an estimated standard time to cross or clear the crossing and adding on a few additional seconds. It should always be at least 27 seconds regardless, though.
