Ectopic salpingectomy is a surgical procedure in which one or both fallopian tubes are removed due to the presence of an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the uterus, most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. If left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can lead to serious health complications, including the rupture of the fallopian tube and internal bleeding. In some cases, medication can be used to terminate the ectopic pregnancy, but surgery may be necessary if the pregnancy has progressed too far or if the woman's health is at risk. During an ectopic salpingectomy, the surgeon makes a small incision near the affected fallopian tube and removes it. In some cases, the other fallopian tube may also be removed if it is damaged or if the woman does not want to risk another ectopic pregnancy in the future. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes about an hour to complete. After the surgery, the woman will need to rest and avoid strenuous activity for several weeks while her body heals. She may also need to take pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. The woman's fertility may be affected by the removal of one or both fallopian tubes, but many women are still able to conceive with the remaining tube(s) or with the help of assisted reproductive technology.
