Tense moments unfolded on the LRT as a man was captured on video intensely staring at a woman and reportedly clenching his fists after seeing a Muslim woman wearing a niqab (face covering.) Sent to us: “Hi , I’m a 19-year-old Muslim woman studying at the University of Alberta. After class today, I was on the train when I noticed a man sitting across from me staring intensely in my direction. As a visibly Muslim woman who wears the niqab (face veil), I could feel his hatred. He clenched his fists and seemed determined to catch my gaze, making me feel incredibly uncomfortable and unsafe. This man didn’t appear homeless but seemed like a working professional or student. Thankfully, another passenger stepped in and de-escalated the situation, but I’m sharing this to raise awareness and warn others in Edmonton—Muslims and other minorities—about this individual. No one should feel unsafe simply for existing or expressing their identity. Here’s a video that I captured. I started recording after a couple seconds of noticing him staring. The angle isn’t the best as I was worried he would notice and get physical. This happened today at 3:40pm at the university station train headed towards century park.” Thoughts?
