The explore Hidden along a quiet stretch of Penland Road stands CheckerFloorCareHome, a building with a long and layered past. Originally built as a private house, it was expanded in the 1960s and 70s, when new wings and connecting blocks were added. Over time, those changes transformed it into a full residential care home, supporting older residents for decades until its closure around 2021. Today, stepping up to CheckerFloorCareHome feels like walking into a paused moment. The garden is overgrown, the paint faded, and the windows sit dark and empty. Inside, long corridors stretch ahead, lined with handrails and old fixtures that once guided the daily routines of carers and residents. You can almost feel the echoes of life that once filled these rooms — conversations over tea, staff moving quietly between bedrooms, sunlight spilling through clean hallways. Now, after sitting silent for over two years, the atmosphere is completely different. Rooms are bare, paperwork is scattered, and the building carries that unmistakable stillness of abandonment. Yet its story isn’t over. Just next door, the local college is preparing to turn these empty spaces into student accommodation, ready to replace silence with new voices and movement. Exploring CheckerFloorCareHome is like stepping between eras — its past still clinging to the walls, its future waiting just beyond the doorway. History Hidden along Penland Road in Bexhill-on-Sea sits a building with a quiet but fascinating past. Today it looks like just another empty property, but for decades it played an important role in the community. The story begins with a large private house built many years ago, later expanded and altered during the 1960s and 70s, when new wings and connecting buildings were added. These changes slowly transformed the old home into a fully functioning residential care facility. By the time it officially appeared on the Care Quality Commission register, the care home had become a medium-sized service supporting older residents, including those living with dementia. It offered accommodation across two floors, garden areas, lounges, and a quiet, family-run atmosphere. In 2019, it even received a “Good” rating in its CQC inspection. But like many small care homes across the UK, the care home eventually faced rising costs and increasing pressures. Around 2021 or 2022, it closed its doors for the last time. Furniture was removed, the front drive fell silent, and for more than two years the building sat empty — a once-busy home now left frozen in time. Its future changed again when the neighbouring Bexhill College stepped in. With growing demand for local accommodation, the site began conversion work to create student living spaces. The quiet hallways that once held residents are now being prepared for a very different kind of life: new students, new voices, and a new purpose. Today, the care home stands as a building with many chapters — from family home, to care home, to future student accommodation — a reminder of how places evolve, long after the stories inside them have ended. ☆ DISCLAIMER: I do not force entry into any locations, neither do I vandalise or take part in any other criminal activity.
