(5 Jun 2019) The popular elevated High Line park in Manhattan is expanding with a new section, called the Spur, which includes an open plaza with space for large artwork. The debut sculpture is called Brick House, a sixteen-foot-tall bronze bust of a black woman with no eyes by artist Simone Leigh. It will be on display for 18 months. The High Line park offered bird's-eye views and a new way to repurpose the city's industrial past when it opened in June 2009. Built on a former rail line once slated for demolition, the High Line welcomes 7 million visitors a year and has inspired urban parks built on disused infrastructure around the world. The High Line's 10th birthday this week coincides with the June 5th opening of the park's last section, called the Spur, which includes an open plaza with space for a large artwork.
