First of all, I want to tell you that each one of the systems is good for the purpose it is designed. For example the drive shaft great for long travels on the nice asphalt roads, but it has some limitations when it comes to the off-road terrains. The chain is good for any roads, but it requires more maintenance and wears much quicker. So these are the obvious things and I am not going to talk about it. Long adventure trip, what exactly this mean for you? For some people could be to travel around the world in some of the most difficult terrains for another to make short trips around their hometown. Some riders love off road, some hate it. The first and very important step is to know what exactly you want. You have to understand that my or anyone’s opinion it doesn’t matter, because at the end you are going to ride that bike and you will have the positives or the negativities of the choice you have made! Still confused, let me clarify this for you: If you love to have this massive big adventure bike with possibilities to load a lot of luggage and drive it with 160km on the highways and maybe to be able to cross some gravel sections the drive shaft is what you need. On the other hand if you are looking for real off road experience and as more as possible dirt roads, then the chain will be a perfect solution. Here of course I will expect many commend from drive shaft owners to explain that it is not a problem to ride in any terrains, to show me pictures with their bikes off road and many more, but I am sure that they will get the idea. For those who cannot I will explain a bit longer. The idea of the off road riding is to have as light as possible motorcycle, with good suspension and the right wheel combination. So far everyone will agree with me. You will also confirm that 21 inch front wheel is better for such a terrains, right? So far so god, now I want you to show me big adventure motorcycle, with good suspension, 21 inch front wheel and drive shaft, can you? And just to make it even more clearly I will let you know that 21 inch front wheel and the less kg on the rear side, because of the chain you will be able to ride much faster and safer on the bad, bumpy or dirt roads compare to the drive shaft. The reason of that is because when you stand on the pegs the only weight on the rear will be the bike and the weight itself. Actually when you riding the rear will jump like a goat on all side absorbing the bumps and the lighter it is the easier for you is going to be. Another one, also very important moment to consider is the possibility to fix it in the case of break down. Chains and sprockets you can find almost everywhere, you can even have it with you, but it is not the same with drive shafts. For me it is absolutely clear that I don’t need anything else than simple chain. Yes, I still have to maintain it and change it more often and what? To spray it once per 500km, clean it once per 2,000km and change it every 20,000km is not a problem for me, I even make it with pleasure. The important is to have the right combination when I hit the bad roads, but that’s me your preferences could be totally different and completely understand and respect that.
