I've "upgraded" the radio (ok, binned the radio!) in my Defender 90 with an Apple iPad Air 2. This has been complemented by a Ram X grip mount system and a stereo amp linked directly to the speakers. A little Garmin navigation unit was also needed, read on! The iPad Bluetooths to the amp and the Garmin to the iPad. All in all I feel it is a great upgrade but it turned out to be a little more costly than I expected. The Ram parts were expensive but are bullet proof. I used the 1.5" ball mounts as thats what's recommenced for a large tablet. As I wanted a really secure base I removed part of the grey dash trim and made a round 3mm steel base that was bolted to the Defenders bulkhead. This base had 4 holes, tapped to 5mm to suit the Ram round ball base. The trim was then refitted and 4 small holes made in it to correspond with the fabricated steel base. This way the Ram kit could be removed without leaving big holes for a new owner should I ever want to sell the truck. Unfortunately I didn't take any video of this. Sorry!! The "Nobsound" stereo amp is hard wired to the Defenders existing speakers. The pad, amp and Garmin pickup power from the ignition so are enabled when the ignition is turned on (position1, no engine running). The stereo amp was chosen as it could be powered from 9v-24v Dc. Depending on the supply voltage depends on the wattage output, a max of 50watts at 24volts I'm told! I had mistakenly thought the iPad would do all the navigation work but I now know a Wifi only iPad does not contain the necessary hardware for GPS hence the add-on of the Garmin. This just chats to Google maps via bluetooth when I'm navigating. It really works well. Just a tad more expensive than I first thought. If you have any thoughts or suggests then feel free to leave them.
