Every time we get used Merrill guitar, and we've handled more than a dozen now, we hear ourselves saying the same thing: If you want a guitar that looks, sounds, and feels like a 1930′s Martin, but you do not want to spend $20,000 to $40,000 on a Martin of that vintage, then Jim Merrill captures that vibe as well as any modern builder, perhaps better. It's true, a Merrill has that warm (Mahogany & Red Spruce) 30′s tone, those scooped mids, and the soft sweet trebles that run counter to today's gunslinger guitars which tend to have boosted midranges and piano-like trebles. We like both kinds of music: Country and Western, and we like both kinds of guitars. This is OM-18 # 312. It is in excellent ++ condition. It is priced at $4,950. It is signed on the underside of the top in pencil by Jim Merrill and is dated 4/27/09. The guitar sounds like the best old lightly braced, hide glue Martin and the neck feels like a 1930′s "V" shape Martin, or one you might find on a Martin of that era - but this hunk of lumber boasts a truss rod and a very comfortable 1 and 3/4″ nut width and 2 and 5/16″ saddle spacing with cool pyramid bridge. The scale length is "long" and the tuners are open back nickel Gotohs. The guitar sounds simply FANTASTIC -- no additional superlatives are necessary. It weighs a little over 3.5 pounds.
