The high seas cover half of the planet’s surface and are home to a lot of marine life, many of which we might not have discovered yet. Despite its significance, only 1% of the high seas are legally protected. Overfishing, shipping and acidification are some of the threats facing the high seas, one of the last remaining wilderness on Earth. A new international treaty aims to fill that gap. After years of negotiation, countries around the world agreed upon the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Treaty) last year. Sixty countries will need to ratify the treaty for it to go into effect. In this video, Mongabay looks at why the treaty is significant and the big questions that still remain unanswered. --- We want to hear from you.
