We trekked the Gosainkunda Helambu trail in Nepal in early April 2023 in partnership with Kathmandu-based trekking agency Himalayan Masters. We joined the trail directly after our Langtang Valley trek, adding an extra 6 days to our route and ending at Kutumsang. Along with our guide, Govinda Rai, we trekked from the Langtang/Gosainkunda trail junction near Pairo to Gosainkunda lake (4400 m) over 3 days via Thulo Syabru and Laurebina. We spent 2 nights at the lake, then crossed the Laurebina Pass (4646 m) to Ghopte, and trekked to Kutumsang on the last day. It's possible to continue trekking another 1.5 days to Sundarijal, close to Kathmandu, or take a bus or private jeep from Kutumsang back to Kathmandu, like we did. Part of a group of high altitude alpine lakes, Gosainkunda (4400 m) (also spelt Gosaikunda) is a spectacular sapphire jewel in the mountains of Langtang National Park. The entire area has huge importance within Hindu mythology, and Gosainkunda, home to major deities, is the most prominent and significant lake. Countless pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area to bathe in the lake’s holy waters, with those numbers swelling during the Ganga Dashahara and Janai Purnima festivals. This gives the trek a different feel and atmosphere to most others in Nepal.
