The Gatekeeping of the Retro Gaming Community | Gaming - TV and Lust

Meet people where they are, not where you want them to be. I am often reluctant to identify myself with a particular group, even if I really am a part of that group. I have rarely referred to myself as a gamer, as a retro collector or even as a YouTuber. It’s no big secret that I AM those things. But as an entrenched member of these communities, I am more likely to see the worst of them and my reluctance to identify as part that group is explicitly to avoid being confused with the bad apples. The worst of our communities are typically a minority in numbers, but are often folks that carry influence. It’s worth inspecting how their rhetoric can act as gatekeeping within the gaming community. These things are often small, and expressed as “just an opinion” (especially when challenged), but the tone and intent convey implicit ideas about who is welcome and who is not. Let’s stop this.
