For donations please click on the "support" button on the right side of the main channel page:    / vipertech30813   There comes a time eventually with you need to clean the EGR valve on a Dodge Cummins 6.7 liter diesel engine. The reason could be one of two. The first is that you may have gotten a code related to the EGR valve and now your trying to clean it to see if the code goes away before you have to replace it. The other reason is the major service that comes up every 67,500 miles. This is the reason for the perform service message on the overhead/cluster as well. Either way the reason makes no difference because the procedure is the same. The removal of the EGR valve is simple enough to the point that I never understood why the labor rate on items such as Mitchell same it takes longer. You need to remove the upper plastic engine cover and in order to do that the oil dipstick has to come out. The cover is attached with a total of 4 8mm bolts. With the cover out of the way you now have direct access to the EGR valve assembly and the crossover tube/pipe leading to it. The valve has one electrical connector for the solenoid. There are a total of 4 10mm bolts hold the EGR valve in place and one v-band clamp holding the crossover pipe to the EGR valve that you need a 11mm to loose. The valve will stay in place due to the gaskets until you give it a gentle tap with your hand to free it up. Once off the vehicle we can take it over to the work bench inorder to remove the EGR solenoid and start to take the EGR valve apart before addign the cleaning fluid to it. The solenoid is attached with 4 phillips screws and has a thin metal gasket that is reusable. Once the solenoid is off, you can now see the spring, retainer, and keepers that hold it in place. To help with getting the keepers off, I place a rag in the lower EGR valve opening to prevent the valve from opeing while applying downward pressure on the spring to allow the keepers to be removed. Take care to now loose the keepers because they are small and if the spring pops back....they can get lost. We should now be down to just the EGR valve at this point and the valve will be free to move. We now need to added the EGR cleanign fluid to the ports of the valve and place it in a position to hold as much as the fluid as possible. I recommend letting it sit with the fluid insdie for about 2-4 hours. Once done you will need to wash the valve off until you no longer have any cleaner left. Then its time to let it air dry. Once the EGR valve is dry and clean...we can start reinstalling the spring, retainer, and keepers. I use the rag in the lower port like I did during the removal. Then I apply a little bit of grease to the area of the valve where the keepers will be placed. The grease holds the keepers once in place until you release the spring tension and allow the retainer to hold them in their final position. Remove the rag and press in on the valve repeatedly to varifiy its working smootly. If all is well then reinstall the electrical solenoid and thin metal gasket. Now installation of the EGR valve back on to the engine is just the opposite of the removal. Just make sure to clean all the old gasket material off and give it a good blowing with compressed air to remove as much soot as posssible.
