Was “Poverty” Invented? The Politics of Development and Postcolonialism

What if “development” wasn’t about helping the world’s poor, but about managing them? In this video, we trace how the modern idea of development emerged out of colonialism and Cold War geopolitics. From President Truman’s 1949 speech that “invented” the term underdeveloped areas to postdevelopment theorists like Arturo Escobar, Gustavo Esteva, and James Ferguson, we explore how development became a powerful political project—one that defines who is modern, who is backward, and who gets to decide. Drawing on the legacies of empire, economic dependency, and the “anti-politics machine,” this lecture challenges the comforting myth that development is neutral or benevolent. Instead, it asks a deeper question: what if development itself is one of the ways global
