From the plantation to the present, Black Women’s labor has been exploited, and our worth has too often been defined by what we produce. This LIVE conversation dives deep into how that legacy shows up in our jobs today—and the toll it takes on our identities, confidence, and well-being. Drawing from Dr. Joy DeGruy’s groundbreaking book "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing" (DeGruy, 2005), we’ll explore how the historical trauma of slavery continues to influence Black Women’s workplace experiences and the barriers to healing. In this conversation, we’ll unpack: Identity and labor: How being brought to this country to exploit our labor still impacts how Black Women connect their jobs to their self-worth and identity. Job titles & self-esteem: What happens when who we are becomes fused with job positions or titles, and the deep cost it has on our mental health. “Vacant self-esteem” & "crabs in a barrel": Why lateral harm and competition between Black Women at work are often symptoms of generational trauma. The “overseer mentality”: How some Black managers act as gatekeepers, keeping other Black employees “in their place” and why this is so painful for our communities. Double-consciousness in the workplace: How constantly viewing ourselves through the lens of white supremacy impacts the way Black Women move through professional spaces. Plantation language: Why so many Black Women refer to their jobs as “the plantation” and stay because of fears about leaving a “good job with good benefits.” Tapping into intuition: How to trust our natural instincts and feelings as survival tools in toxic workplaces. Healing the wound: Tips rooted in Dr. DeGruy’s work This conversation isn’t just about jobs—it’s about breaking chains. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a workplace that chips away at your soul, or questioned why leaving feels like betraying everything you were taught about “good jobs,” this is for you. 📖 Citation: DeGruy, J.
