Outside St Helen’s Primary School in Swansea, a flood-prone stretch of road has been transformed into a vibrant, nature-filled space where rainwater flows smarter, wildlife thrives, and families feel more connected. Designed by Robert Bray Associates, RainScape Swansea is a community-led project that has reimagined how urban spaces tackle flooding, boost biodiversity, and support active travel. With 12 rain gardens, bee habitat posts, playful features, and permeable paving, it’s a space designed for walking, cycling, and everyday joy. For the first time in 150 years, families have safe, inclusive access to the school. And for local parent Amina Yusuf, the change is personal: “Now it’s a peaceful, beautiful space where my kids can play and I can catch my breath after work.” The project is a blueprint for climate-resilient communities across Wales and beyond. This project was delivered by Natural Resources Wales, Swansea Council, Urban Foundry, and the Sandfields community, with funding from Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, Local Places for Nature, NRW’s Water Capital Programme, and the Wates Family Enterprise Trust.
