German Women POWs Couldn’t Believe They Were Served Coffee and Cake April 1945. Western Germany. The war is collapsing. Smoke still hangs over the horizon where artillery has been firing through the night. Roads are crowded with retreating soldiers, abandoned vehicles, and civilians carrying what little they can save. The Third Reich, which once promised a thousand years of power, is now surviving hour to hour. Along a muddy roadside near a temporary Allied processing camp, a small group of German women stand quietly under armed guard. They are not soldiers in the usual sense. Most wear gray auxiliary uniforms. Some are communications clerks. Others served in anti-aircraft batteries or military offices. A few are nurses. Only days earlier they had still believed Germany might resist for months. Now they are prisoners. They wait for what comes next. For years they had been warned what capture would mean.
