This joint play mobilization procedure I use commonly to reduce Capitate subluxations anteriorly. Anterior Capitate subluxation is commonly found with patients who have their wrists in extension, particularly loaded extension as in Massage Therapist, chiropractors, and people who weight lift. When the Capitate is subluxed towards the carpal tunnel it can reduce the space in the carpal tunnel and put pressure on the 9 flexor tendons and the median nerve within this space. This can result in dysfunction of the tendons and median nerve and may contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome along with wrist and hand pain and dysfunction. I call the Capitate the "Captain of the wrist" as all the carpal bones move around this center keystone including the 3rd metacarpal. When the Captain of the wrist is out of alignment this causes havoc on the rest of the hand and wrist. It is helpful to treat the Adductor Pollicis (Oblique head) before the mobilization as the Oblique head has a palmar attachment to the capitate.
